COTTONFLESH SACRIFICE ART SHOW AND INSTALLATION at UMA GALLERY, OAKLAND 2022

Cottonflesh Sacrifice is a multimedia collection of artwork by 2019 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and San Francisco Art Institute alumna Christiane Cegavske. The show features an immersive installation that includes Cegavske’s stop-motion animated projections, life-sized dolls, and a musical soundscape by Karie Jacobson and Drew Kowalski of The Dagons.

This new collection of artworks invites you to enter Cegavske’s dreamlike world of imagery evoking feminine archetypes, fantastical creatures, dolls and fairy tales, birth and death. Rendered in a dazzling variety of mediums, the work allows the viewer to experience the impact of the symbolic language on multiple levels as they are immersed in this unique universe.

In Cottonflesh Sacrifice Cegavske’s large-scale sculptures echo her stop-motion film world. The installation features five gutted rag dolls hanging from nine-foot-high power poles that surround a stone well. Those who enter are surrounded by a cloud of otherworldly siren song.

Jacobson created an otherworldly effect with the feeling of a supernatural language by singing backwards vocal tracks made up of phrases in twelve languages. These ethereal backwards voices entwine with sounds created by Drew Kowalski that evoke the buzzing and hum of power poles and wires in an urban environment.

COTTON FLESH AND STARDUST ART SHOW AND INSTALLATION at SUGAR BANK, LOS ANGELES 2021

Cotton Flesh and Stardust presented by Joe Holliday and Lisa Derrick Fine Arts at Sugar Bank in Los Angeles, California is a collection of paintings and mixed media works by 2019 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and award-winning filmmaker Christiane Cegavske. The show features an immersive installation that is a collaboration between Cegavske, and Karie Jacobson and Drew Kowalski of The Dagons

Cegavske’s large-scale sculptures evoke the miniature images from her award-winning stop-motion film world. The experiential installation blends five gutted rag dolls surrounding a stone well with elements of the urban environment of Los Angeles — aging power poles, chain link fencing, local dirt, and weeds.

Within its decaying chain-link fence, the eighteen-foot by eighteen-foot installation commanded the center of the forty-foot gallery space, dividing Cegavske's collection of paintings and mixed media artworks in two. Immersing themselves in the sound and sights, visitors passed through the weed covered fence to walk the dirt path beneath the indiferent gaze of five gutted dolls hanging from power poles.
